THE PHILOSOPHY OF ISLAMIC ART: FROM NASR AND FARUQI TO IQBAL AND INAYAT KHAN
Islam, as a religion, is rarely associated with art and more often linked to law (sharia). This has shaped an image of Islam that appears predominantly masculine, emphasizing its jalaliyah (majestic) aspect. Therefore, it is important to highlight Islam’s jamaliyah (beautiful) side by discussing art—an aspect that remains relatively rare and marginalized.
This book explores Islamic art and aesthetics through the perspectives of four philosophers: Inayat Khan, Ismail Raji al-Faruqi, Muhammad Iqbal, and Seyyed Hossein Nasr. They demonstrate that Islam places significant importance on beauty. Art is not merely decorative or instrumental; it is firmly rooted in Islamic teachings.
Doesn’t God Himself declare that He is Most Beautiful and loves beauty?
This book fills a gap in the study of art and aesthetics in Islam.
