Savour the scent of clove and tobacco—Indonesia’s history in a story. Soeraja, dying, calls for Jeng Yah, a woman not his wife. His sons—Lebas, Karim, and Tegar, heirs to Kretek Djagad Raja, the nation’s largest clove cigarette empire—are shocked. Their quest for Jeng Yah leads them into Java’s heart, uncovering family secrets and the evolution of the kretek business across three generations—from Dutch colonial times, Japanese occupation, independence struggle, to the 1965 coup.
