PHILOSOPHY OF HAPPINESS: FROM PLATO, THROUGH AL-FARABI AND AL-GHAZALI TO KI AGENG SURYOMETARAM
People may differ in many ways, but they will agree on one thing: they want to be happy. Unfortunately, the meaning of happiness varies greatly and can even be contradictory. Thus, it's worth asking: what exactly is happiness?
Four wise figures—Plato, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali, and Ki Ageng Suryomentaram—offer their concepts of happiness and the ways to achieve it. Although each takes a different approach, there are some striking similarities: that one must know oneself as a starting point, and one must find oneself as the ultimate goal. It is impossible to achieve happiness without knowing who you are and what happiness means to you.
